Myth - Keto means very high fat

One of the biggest myths surrounding the Keto Diet is that it means eating a lot of fat. A quick Google search will return pages of results advising that you need to consume 70-75% fat when you are following the Keto Diet.

Natural Ketosis has been working with the Keto diet and creating Keto products for various reasons for over 15 years. Read more below as Amanda breaks it all down, explains things a little more and breaks this myth into facts!

Is the Keto diet a high fat Diet?
Yes and no! I know that sounds a bit strange but the truth is that there are different variations of the Keto Diet which are used for different purposes. Each of these diets provides a different amount of fat.

What are the different versions of the Keto Diet?
The Medical Keto diet
- there are 4 versions which can be prescribed - Classical, Modified, MCT and Low GI
High Fat, Low Carb diet for performance in endurance sports
Moderate Fat, Low Carb diet for weight loss and management of conditions like Diabetes Type 2 and PCOS for instance.

What are the differences?
The true and original Keto diet was created many years ago as a treatment for epilepsy. This diet is still used as a treatment to aid alongside medications. These diets MUST be high fat for medical reasons. The exact amount of fat will vary from person to person and should be discussed with a dietician or specialist.
Natural Ketosis works alongside our friends at Matthew's Friends providing support and help where we can but this also encouraged us to create our sister company called Ketocare Foods. Through this company, we create products which are higher in fat and available on prescription in the UK and Ireland to aid in the management of epilepsy in children.

Over the years, we have been able to adapt the principles of the original Keto diet to help with other health concerns like weight loss, blood sugar management and PCOS for instance. There is currently a study happening here in Edinburgh looking at the effects of the Keto diet on Bipolar Disorder. The Keto diet can also be used for performance in endurance sports. Check out our post from Totally Oardacious who is not only gearing up to be the oldest solo woman to row across the Atlantic but is also doing it following a Keto diet!!!

For those looking to lose weight or manage a medical condition, low carb moderate fat is actually a better approach whereas those looking to improve performance will benefit from a higher fat approach.

Why does the amount of fat recommended vary depending on my goal?
When weight loss is the main goal, fat consumed in your diet needs to be moderated. The simple reason for this is the more fat you eat, the less you needs to burn for itself.
When your body is in the amazing state of Ketosis you are burning fat for energy. If you consume 100% of the energy your body needs each day, there is no need to burn your own fat for energy so, although you would be in Ketosis and feeling the positive benefits, you would not see weight loss.
If you reduce the amount of fat you are consuming, your body will start to burn stored body fat to make up the shortfall in energy. This will provide you with weight loss and quick changes to your body shape.

For those looking for management of conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes or PCOS, losing a few pounds normally goes hand in hand so the same rules apply however, if you are happy with your weight but looking to keep your condition stable, you can increase the amount of fat you consume to provide the energy needed by your body each day.

If you are aiming to manage other conditions like epilepsy or cancer we would recommend speaking with a dietician as all advice will be personal to each individual. Matthew's Friends Charity provides free support and advice. If you are not sure where to start, I would recommend reaching out to them. They have a large network of people they can refer and connect you to to get you the advice you need.

What if I reach my weight loss goal but want keep eating Keto?
Amazing! That's what I like to hear! If, like me, you fall in love with the Keto Feeling and want to continue there is no reason why you can't. I would say that I follow Keto 80% of the time and the rest of the time I follow a lower carb diet. The great news is that there are no ill effects of continuing the Keto diet, you just need to amend your daily intake of fat.

When you get to your goal weight, you no longer want to burn body so switching to a higher fat intake will ensure that you are consuming 100% of the fat you need each day from the food you eat. This will ensure you are not lethargic and keeping you feeling full between meals.
