Alcohol & the Keto Diet

One of the big questions we get asked is "Can I still have alcohol when I am doing the Keto Diet?"

The answer is yes, but....

The truth is, it is not as straightforward as we would like it to be. Whilst there are some more Keto friendly options, any alcohol reduces the body's ability to burn fat so this can temporarily affect Ketosis. This means that as soon as you have alcohol, fat burning stops and the body switches to using the toxins in the alcohol for energy.

Whilst the occasional small drink will cause minimal disruption to Ketosis and likely cause no side effects, the more you have, the more time it will stop Ketosis and the more impact it will have on your results.

The best options to have whilst following a Keto Diet are;
A small red wine or prosecco
Gin, whiskey, vodka or rum with a slimline tonic (try to avoid diet drink mixers as they contain aspartame)

In summary, moderation is key! Try to avoid alcohol where possible for the best results and choose Keto friendly options to enjoy in moderation when you would like to have some alcohol.
